Environmental changes the world over, have created problems such as desertification, silting of dam reservoirs, water logging and salinity, degradation and contamination of surface and groundwater. Over exploitation of resources is destroying the environment and we are facing the danger of degradation, destruction and elimination of an Ecological infrastructure that is so essential for us as well as for our future generations.
Keeping in view the importance and the growing demand for a "Environmental Friendly" surrounding, an Institute of Environmental Sciences was established for the first time in the University of the Punjab in the year 2000.
This Institute is already running 3 Years B.Sc. (Honors) Degree Program under the Semester System that will lead to M.Sc. and Ph. D. levels. This program is in its first year phase and wilt take another 2 years to complete. In the meantime to meet the national needs and requirements for environmental planning etc. a Masters Program (Evening) of 2 years duration i.e. 4 semesters, under the self-supporting scheme is being started from October 2001.
