In 1950 the Department of Statistics was established in the University of the Punjab. In the same year, in addition to a post-graduate Diploma course, a two-year Master's degree program in Statistics was started. In 1952 the department was upgraded to the status of an Institute. Since its inception the Institute has been engaged in individual and collective research in the field of Theoretical and Applied Statistics. In 2000, the Institute has started a regular full time Ph.D. program. In 2003, institute established a centre “Operation Research Centre”. In 2004, the institute, in addition to the regular Ph.D program, started “M.Phil Leading towards Ph.D” program and M.Sc in Biostatistics. Moreover, the institute is going to start M.Sc in Actuarial Science from the academic year 2005. In order to promote the research activities and to expose the research process to the young statisticians, a research journal “Pakistan Journal of Statistics and Operation Research” will be published from the institute biannually from the year 2005, the first issue of the research journal in on the way. Statistical tools are the unavoidable tools for any research activity, in order to provide the consultancy to the researchers, a statistical consultancy centre has been established which will start its work from this year.
Over the past years, the Institute of Statistics has had the privilege of producing many eminent statisticians. The graduates of this Institute hold positions of eminence in Research Organizations, Education, and Industries as well as in administration, at home and abroad.
