During the last 50 years 1948 to 1998, PU produced only 740 Ph.Ds, on the average 15 per year, and in sciences only 244 Ph.Ds, on the average 5 per year. A regular Ph.D program of 24 credit hours course work was launched in 2001. 786 M.Phil, 29 M.Phil. leading to Ph.D., and 813 Ph.D. candidates are registered today under regular scheme and 185 under old scheme.

We have planned 100 Ph.Ds per year in the
following years.
• Duration
of Ph.D. program has been reduced from 7 to 5 years. Any
candidate publishing three research papers in international
periodicals/journals, the thesis will be accepted. Rs.100,000/-
and Rs.50,000/- will be awarded, to the supervisors and
candidates, respectively.
• Rs. 25000/-
are awarded to the teachers, who publish a research paper
in a foreign journal.
• Previously
25% pay of outstation officers, doing Ph.D, was deducted.
The Governor has notified full pay for outstation Ph.D candidates.
• Ph.D. stipend
has been enhanced from Rs. 2500/- to Rs. 4,000/- P.M.
