Area Improvement
a. The PU area has been cleared of jungle, which was a sanctuary for dacoits/thieves/snakes. The area has been beautified with ornamental trees and seasonal flowers. Children Park has also been provided for children.
b. “University of the Punjab” neon sign have been installed to indicate its location to out-siders. Quaid-e-Azam's sayings and portraits have been displayed at appropriate places to motivate people. Character building motivational Quranic Commandments, poetry of Allama Iqbal have also been displayed on Campus.
c. Dark areas have been illuminated by security lights and beautification lights.
d. Allama Iqbal Campus: Almost all the buildings at Allama Iqbal Campus were in a dilapidated condition which could cause a colossal loss to façade and life. A gigantic master plan was prepared to carry out repairs and renovations so that these valuable buildings could be restored. The main buildings renovated are Old Hailey College of Commerce, Qasim Hall at Hailey College of Commerce, Oriental College and University Main Hall.
e. Reception and Information Centre next to Gate No.2 has been constructed to guide visitors to the Administrative Block and various departments.
f . Bus Stand Old bus Stand/Work-shop had created congestion in the Faculty area. New Workshop has been constructed and buses shifted next to Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre. The area vacated is now being used for a separate girls cafeteria.
g. Employees Quarters: 14 new low paid employees quarters have been constructed after 30 years. 54 quarters are under construction and will be completed by December this year, Insha ALLAH. B-Type, E-Type, GH-Type, will be constructed during next financial year.
h. Commercial Area: New commercial area in the colony has been completed. PU Floral Shops have also been constructed and given on rent. Commercial area for hostels has also been planned.
Khanaspur Campus: PU acquired five British Army Barracks with an area of 11745 square yards in 1964 to establish its third campus at Khanaspur. It was meant to provide academic and recreational facility to the staff and students during summers. The area was left unattended and was in a dilapidated condition. This campus has now been completely renovated and is being used for academic activities as well as a summer resort.
Hostels: Prior to the year 1999, the Hostels were in a very bad shape. Rs.35,00,000 were allocated to the Hall Council during 2001 and Rs.40,00,000 during 2002. Repairs have now been carried out and the Hostels are in a good living condition. Additional hostels have been constructed. Sports facilities have been provided both to girls as well as boys hostels. Over-head tanks have been constructed to supply water to third floor.
New Mosque There was no provision for Mosque at the time of construction of Admin. Block. After shifting of offices from Allama Iqbal Campus in the Quaid-e-Azam Campus, the employees felt difficulty in offering their Zohar and Asar prayers.
It was decided by the Vice-Chancellor that a new Mosque be constructed next to the Administrative Block. A beautiful mosque is now complete and is being used for offering prayers.
Jamia Mosque: No repair or renovation of the PU Jamia Mosque had been undertaken since long. It now has been repainted and repaired. Lighting arrangement has been improved and polished the Teak wood doors. Besides this, the entire courtyard has been marbled, and flash lights have been fitted in the center giving an open and beautiful look.
Decentralization of Maintenance to Departments: The maintenance of Departments has been decentralised and separate units have been established for the hostel area, the academic / administrative blocks and the residential area for immediate redressal of any complaints regarding the water supply, sanitation, gas, electricity and repair of electric appliances etc. This has improved the standard of maintenance.
Faisal Auditorium : Faisal Auditorium was in a poor state of maintenance in 1999. The false ceiling had fallen at a number of places. Bats in the hall were in abundance. It leaked during rains. Convocations were not held due to its dilapidated condition. It has now been completely renovated and convocations are held regularly during the last 5 years.
