HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
(ESTABLISHED 1921)
The Punjab University Department of Zoology was established in 1921. It was then housed in the laboratories of the Government College, Lahore.In 1963, the Punjab University shifted its Zoology Department to its New Campus, now called Quaid-i-Azam Campus.
Main Introduction
The Department of Zoology, a discipline of natural sciences, meets the need of training persons in a vast basic and interdisciplinary framework concerning Animal Sciences. The Department has earned international recognition for academic excellence and prominence in various fields of research like Cell, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Developmental Biology, Entomology, Palaeontology, Parasitology and Fisheries, etc. A Zoology graduate after Master’s degree or B.Sc. (Hons.) 4 years has a diverse experience and competence to serve or learn further in education, health, agriculture, industry and environment sectors.
The Department has one of the most highly trained Faculty of Zoology comprising of 5 Professors, 3 Associate Professor, 17 Assistant Professors and 4 Lecturers (+2 contract teachers) in the country. Almost all disciplines of Zoological Sciences are represented and hence distinguish the Department of Zoology of this University from other universities in Pakistan. Syllabi are updated and audio visual aids are used to improve teaching. New equipments are added to research laboratories to meet the current needs of researchers in Animal Sciences.
A total of 172 books (recent editions) and 20 journals (in exchange programme) are added in departmental library.
The main degree programs in the department include M.Sc., BS (4 years program), MS/M.Phil (2 years program), Ph.D. (Regular program and External program). Besides, M.Sc. (Evening) program is also introduced to meet the increasing demand of graduates in life sciences (see table below).
The Department has excellent record in research component, particularly, in Ph.D. program. The students of BS, M.Sc. and M.S. do research work as a part of the requirements for the fulfillment of the degree. The students are registered for the degree of Ph.D. under regular Ph.D. program as well as External program.
The training of a graduate at Zoology Department may be compared with a cross road, which leads to pathways to diverse destinations, a Zoology graduate can join and further excel in diverse professions. The graduates have options to adopt the following professions: a) Teaching in Universities/Colleges/Higher Secondary Schools, b) Researchers at numerous public/private sector research organizations such as Pakistan Agriculture Research Council, life sciences based institutes of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission etc., c) Researchers-cum-administrator in public/private sector such as Provincial Fisheries Departments, Health Departments, Livestock Departments and Pest Control industry etc.
