PU adopts two lion cubs


LAHORE: (Friday, May 5, 2017): Punjab University Department of Zoology has adopted two months old two lion cubs Chris and Angela at Lahore Zoo for one year. In this regard, a ceremony was held at Lahore Zoo in which PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zaffar Mueen Nasir, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Prof Dr Naeem Khan, Chairman Department of Zoology Prof Dr Javed Iqbal Qazi, Associate Professor Dr Zulfiqar Ali, Director Lahore Zoo Mr Shafqat Ali, Director Headquarters Wildlife Punjab Naeem Bhatti and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

The lion cubs have been named after the British trainers who have recently visited Pakistan and equipped staff with modern zoo keeping techniques. Addressing the ceremony, Dr Zaffar Mueen Nasir said that we must adopt and love animals to promote patience, harmony and peace in society. He said that natural habitats were vanishing and if we did not take preservative steps, a lot of species would face extinction. He said that PU was adopting these animals to sensitize society and philanthropists to take care of animals. He urged the students to create animal protection awareness among people. Dr Naeem Khan said that our religion has also directed to take care of animals. He said that love with animals helped reduce feelings of anger and depressions. Dr Javed Iqbal said that deforestation had resulted in destruction of environment. Mr Naeem Bhatti said that animals were national and international heritage and now awareness among people at large being created to love animals. Later, the PU VC distributed cheques among zoo keeping staff for their excellent performance.
