MMG, PU celebrates World Tuberculosis Day


26th March, 2018: World Tuberculosis Day was celebrated in MMG with the theme of “Wanted: Leaders for a TB free world” to aware students with this top infectious killer and to motivate them in its eradication. Event started with recitation of holy Quran followed by Naat. Hina Khan and Nosheen Ishaq hosted the program and told about the importance of public awareness programs for disease management, diagnosis and treatment. They stated that Pakistan ranks 5th in high burden TB countries so there is a great need of rapid and accurate testing followed by good treatment is necessary to lessen the TB burden. Mr. Hasnain Javed who is molecular biologist in Punjab AIDS Control Program delivered a lecture on Pathogenesis and Transmission of Tuberculosis and highlighted the features of TB disease and told that almost 450000 new patients of TB are diagnosed every year in Pakistan. He commented about increasing drug resistance of TB in Pakistan and said “one sneeze of TB patient can release as much as 5000 infectious agents”. He also told that by proper and timely medication we can not only cure ourselves but also can save our community. Senior scientific officer of Punjab TB Control Program and Focal person in Punjab TB Reference Lab, Dr. Nadia Mukhtar also delivered a lecture regarding working of the Punjab TB control program and spotted light on diagnostic techniques used in different cities of Punjab. She talked about the initiatives taken by TB control program for treatment and diagnosis of this condition. She acknowledged efforts of MMG PU for establishing Youth awareness for TB by lectures and seminars. Muhammad Abid Khan from Human Diagnostics explained salient features of TB LAMP that is rapid, accurate and inexpensive technique for TB diagnosis. Graduate, post graduate students and faculty members participated in the event. The speakers were presented with souvenirs at the end of session. The organizing committee comprising of Dr. Nazia Jamil and Ms. Warda Fatima was congratulated on this successful event.
