Plant Pathology the scientific study of plant diseases is the 'medical profession of the plant world whose goal is the maintenance of plant health and efficiency. The control of plant diseases is essential to the efficient production of food for the growing population, as well as for the production of fiber, lumber, pharmaceuticals and ornamentals. Plant pathology has its roots in basic biological and physical sciences. It involves the study of plants and pathogens at the genetic, biochemical, physiological, cellular, population and community levels. The knowledge derived from these studies is integrated into agricultural practices.
The Department of Mycology and Plant Pathology has been established with the explicit purpose of reinforcing the corps of trained Mycologists/Plant Pathologists whose presence is necessary to ensure crop protection, improved crop health and agriculture based industrial development. Through education, research and extension, the department would be a major contributor to the future of both the basic sciences and plant pathology, and the application of science towards improved agriculture production system.
One of our main foci of interest would be to enhance effectiveness as a department by creating and maintaining proximity and complementarity of Basic Sciences and the Applied Agricultural Sciences, Our research goal would be to understand microbes, plants and their interactions in the environment in order to provide effective approach to control diseases and to maximize the beneficial interaction. Initially, 3 years B.Sc. (Hons.) program was launched and two batches were enrolled in this program. However, a third batch is about to start studies under new 4 years honors program. From this academic session the Department has launched its two years M.Sc. (Hons.) program. This program is going to engage the students with B.Sc. degrees into one-year deficiency course before they move on to M.Sc. (Hons.) courses. The regular as well as conventional Ph.D. program is also underway. The first batch of regular Ph.D. students has completed course work and is going to start the research projects. 1st Fungal Culture Bank of Pakistan in association with the Department is working since June 2003. The effort was highly appreciated by the scientific communities of the country. Progress is being made to build the inventory of fungi and relevant literature needed to solve identification problems.
Department has now entered into a new era of its development. University of the Punjab approved the PC1 worth 20 Million for the new building of the department. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on 8th Dec 2004 and the foundation stone was laid by worthy Vice Chancellor, Punjab University Lt. Gen. (R.) Arshad Mahmood.
