The Quantum Century: A 100-Year Journey of Theory and Thought

LAHORE: (Tuesday, September 30, 2025): Punjab University Department of Physics organized an event titled “The Quantum Century: A 100-Year Journey of Theory and Thought” to celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The program featured insightful presentations on the historical development and philosophical foundations of quantum mechanics—from the groundbreaking ideas of early 20th-century pioneers such as Einstein and Heisenberg to the modern frontiers of research and application. Discussions highlighted a wide spectrum of topics, including the role of quantum theory in driving advanced technologies such as computing, communication, and artificial intelligence, as well as fascinating concepts like quantum teleportation and the transition from classical to quantum systems. On this occasion, PU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, Chairperson Department of Physics Dr Munazza Zulfiqar Ali, Dr Farhan Saif from Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, Dr Aeysha Khalique from LUMS, former Director Center for High Energy Physics Dr Bilal Masud, faculty members and students were present. In his address, Dr Khalid Mahmood reflected on the global significance of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology and emphasized the vital role of science and technology in empowering the youth of Pakistan. In her concluding remarks, Dr Munazza Zulfiqar Ali commended the efforts of the speakers, students and faculty members in making the event a resounding success. She also announced plans for a continuing lecture series to further explore the enduring legacy and future promise of quantum science and technology. Renowned physicists in their talk addressed both the theoretical underpinnings of quantum mechanics and its practical educational dimensions, offering valuable perspectives for students and faculty alike.
