PU CIMR marks int’l mountain day

LAHORE: (Friday, December 12, 2025): Punjab University Centre for Integrated Mountain Research (CIMR) celebrated ‘International Mountain Day 2025’. On this occasion, Director CIMR Prof Dr Saima Siddiqui, Chairman Department of Geography Government Science College Dr Muhammad Ghous, faculty members and students were present. In her address, Dr Saima Siddiqui, while welcoming the distinguished guests, speakers and other participants. She shed light on the importance of the day and briefly talked about the global theme “Glaciers Matter for Water, Food and Livelihoods in Mountains and Beyond.” She also highlighted the urgent need for protecting glacier ecosystems that sustain millions of people. Dr Muhammad Ghous threw light on the alarming rate of glacier retreat and its implications for freshwater availability. He emphasized that glacier-fed basins are critical for Pakistan’s water security and stressed the importance of robust climate monitoring, watershed management, and community engagement to combat the effects of climate change. Dr Muhammad Jabbar from Civil Lines College discussed the indispensable role of glaciers in supporting food production, energy generation, and local livelihoods. He highlighted that millions of people, both in mountain regions and downstream areas, depend on glacial melt water for agriculture, drinking water, and hydropower.
