Council of elders, scholars to make Pakistan a superpower, says Dr Akram Sheikh ![]() LAHORE: (Wednesday, February 23, 2022): Former Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Dr Muhammad Akram Sheikh has said that there was a need to introduce reforms to amend governance system for making Pakistan a superpower and a modern Islamic welfare state. In this regard, he suggested, a Council of Elders and Scholars and a national think tank must be established consisting of non-controversial personalities for formulating long-term policies to move Pakistan in the right direction. He was addressing the launching ceremony of his book "Pakistan A Divine Gift" at Al-Raazi Hall of Punjab University. The event was attended by Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof. Niaz Ahmed, deans of various faculties and a large number of teachers from different departments. Addressing the ceremony, Dr Akram Sheikh said that Islam was a complete code of life and Quaid-e-Azam wanted to make Pakistan a modern Islamic welfare state in accordance with Islamic values. He said that the current situation in India proved that the decision to establish Pakistan was right for the Muslims of the subcontinent. "The solution to all our problems lies in the development in the education sector," he said. He said that after the death of Quaid-e-Azam, the ruling class changed the direction of the country. He said that the institutions of Pakistan were not working in the manner which was the purpose of their establishment. He suggested that the State Institute to Transform Pakistan into a Modern Islamic Welfare State, consisting of neutral people, should be set up through mutual consultation to act as a national think tank and formulate a long term strategy for the development of the country. "Muslims need to correct their behavior," he said, adding one's right was the responsibility of the others. Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed said that Dr. Akram Sheikh's book is an important document to put Pakistan on the path of development from which guidance can be sought in all spheres of governance at national level. He said that Dr. Akram Sheikh has played an important role in the development of Pakistan. He said that his book was ample evidence of his love for Pakistan and his understanding of religion. He said that Pakistan has invested a lot in the educated class of the country and now it was our duty to serve Pakistan and bring its name to limelight.
