PU birds beautifying campuses: VC

LAHORE: (Friday, January 30, 2026): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has said that the PU campuses are home to a wide variety of bird species, which add to its natural beauty. He added that university faculty members are playing their role in protecting the environment and conserving bird life. He was addressing the book launch ceremony of “Birds of the University of the Punjab”, authored by Dr Bushra Nisar Khan organized by the PU Institute of Zoology here on Friday. On this occasion, Vice Chancellor University of Mianwali Prof Dr Nadeem Sheikh, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, Director Institute of Zoology Prof Dr Nabila Roohi, Professor Emeritus Dr A. R. Shakoori, author Dr Bushra Nisar Khan, faculty members and a large number of students were present. In his address, PU VC Prof Dr Muhammad Ali said that the role of teachers is not limited to teaching alone; rather, they also play a vital role in transferring knowledge to the next generation through books. He stated that population growth is affecting agriculture and the breeding of birds. He congratulated the author on producing an informative publication about the birds found at PU. Dr Khalid Mahmood said that writing a comprehensive book on birds despite limited financial resources reflects that our teachers, along with teaching, are also playing a role in conserving the natural environment. He said that due to the abundance of trees at PU, the temperature remains moderate even during summers. Prof Dr A. R. Shakoori said that Punjab University is counted among the most beautiful educational institutions in the world and termed the idea of writing a book on birds found on campus a commendable one. Dr Nabila Roohi said that the book would prove beneficial for researchers in preserving bird species. Dr Bushra Nisar Khan said that writing a book on birds at PU was a dream that has come true today. While outlining the features of the book, she said that it provides detailed information on 105 species of birds, which will be of great interest to students and researchers.
